About Velvet Creme Popcorn
Handcrafted in Kansas City since 1937
Our Mission
“Offer the best product possible at the most affordable price, with consistency each and every time — with customer service a priority.”— Kenneth H. White
Looking back over the past 88 years, our country has changed dramatically. In 1937 there were no home computers, no cell phones, and no 24-hour news networks. Yet even during the Great Depression, a small Kansas City venture began that would influence snacking habits for generations.
Grandparents Howard “Pop” White and Dona “Grammie” White started our family business to support themselves and their three children. With the last paycheck in hand, Howard bought popcorn, oil, salt, and syrup — designed a popper — and got to work. He popped; Grammie sealed popcorn, fudge, and popcorn balls in wax bags with a hot iron to keep everything fresh. Friends came to their home to buy treats, and before long, weekly orders from downtown hotels and theaters pushed the business into a storefront on Broadway.
A First in 1954
In 1954, Velvet Creme Popcorn became the first company to offer gourmet popcorn in a decorated can. The early tins were hand-painted with original designs by Ken’s wife, Patricia — pioneering what we know today as decorated popcorn tins. From Kansas City to the world, Velvet Creme’s “popcorn in a can” quickly became a giftable favorite.
Our Legacy Continues
Our grandparents Howard and Dona, and our parents Ken and Patricia, are no longer with us — but their recipes, craft, and values live on with the 3rd and 4th generations of our family-owned and operated business. While times have changed since 1937, we still make snacks the way we always have: with quality ingredients, small-batch care, and a commitment to outstanding customer service.
Today, Velvet Creme offers popcorn classics, seasonal mixes, gifts, candies, and snacks — all crafted to be fresh, flavorful, and memorable.
